How to Know If You’re Healing or Just Avoiding

Sep 02, 2025
A wide photorealistic landscape of a sunrise casting soft golden light over a winding path through an open green field, symbolizing hope, healing, and the start of a new journey.

You might believe you’re on a path toward healing, only to discover you’ve been running in circles; busy, distracted and avoiding the very wound(s) that needs your attention. I’ve been there. When my sons were born with special needs, I wrestled with God, misjudged Him and even threw a twelve‑year tantrum. My heart ached, my prayers felt unanswered, and I thought God had abandoned me. It wasn’t until I surrendered, stopped blaming and started asking better questions that I realized something important: avoiding pain delays healing; facing it is the doorway to freedom.

Today, as a Freedom Coach at WalkerJames.Life, my mission is simple: help you break free from your brokenness. We invite Jesus into the process, knowing that brokenness leads to Him, He brings healing, and healing produces freedom. This blog explores how to tell whether you’re truly healing or simply avoiding your wounds, offering practical insights and tools based on personal experience, biblical wisdom and the journey I’ve walked.

Understanding True Healing vs. Avoidance

Healing and avoidance may look similar from the outside, but their outcomes couldn’t be more different. Avoidance uses busyness, spiritual sounding phrases, or denial to keep pain at bay. We fill our calendars, volunteer for everything, or hide behind religious clichés like “God works all things for good,” without ever admitting we’re hurting. We might even think we’re trusting God when, in reality, we’re refusing to be honest with Him.

True healing, on the other hand, begins when we stop running from our pain. It acknowledges brokenness, brings emotions into the light and invites God to meet us there. When we face our wounds, we give God permission to reveal deeper truths and realign our perspective. Healing is transformative: it doesn’t just relieve discomfort; it reshapes your heart, renews your mind and strengthens your spirit. Avoidance keeps you cycling through the same patterns; healing propels you toward freedom.

Signs You May Be Avoiding the Hard Work

Chronic Busyness

One of the clearest signs of avoidance is a packed schedule. Are you constantly exhausted because you have no margin? Do you say yes to everything, leaving no space for reflection? Busyness can mask pain. It feels productive, but it often keeps us from sitting quietly with God or acknowledging lingering wounds. If your calendar is your coping mechanism, you may be avoiding healing.

Spiritual Bypassing

Using spiritual language to avoid feelings is another subtle form of avoidance. Saying “It’s all in God’s hands” without processing grief or anger can be a way of ignoring what’s happening inside. True faith doesn’t pretend pain doesn’t exist; it lays pain before God and trusts Him to heal. It’s okay to be honest with God. His love can handle your questions, frustration and doubts.

Emotional Numbness and Walls

If you find it difficult to connect deeply with others or notice you’re always “fine” when asked, you might have built walls around your heart. Numbness, cynicism or an inability to be vulnerable can stem from unprocessed hurt. Avoidance often hardens the heart; healing softens it. Pay attention when you shut down emotionally; it could be your cue to explore what you’re avoiding.

Physical Symptoms and Burnout

Avoidance doesn’t just affect your soul; it can manifest in your body. Chronic stress, fatigue, headaches or trouble sleeping may indicate unresolved trauma. Our bodies hold onto pain. Recognizing that connection can prompt you to seek healing, not just relief.

What Real Healing Looks Like

Honest Naming of the Wound

True healing starts with naming what hurt you. It means admitting the betrayal, the loss, the disappointment, the hurt, the pain. God knows it already, but He wants you to bring it into the light. When I finally admitted my anger toward God and my disillusionment about His plans, I opened the door to understand Him differently. Honesty is always the first step to freedom.

Inviting God into Your Story

God is not interested in religious performances. He wants a relationship with you. Healing happens when you invite Him into your story, not as a distant judge but as a loving Father. Ask Him to show you what you can’t see, to reveal where avoidance has taken root. Pray, listen and let His presence guide you.

Renewing the Mind with Truth

Unhealed wounds often spawn lies; “I’m unlovable,” “God doesn’t care,” “I’ll never change.” Healing involves replacing these lies with truth. Spend time in Scripture, write down promises and speak them over your life. Perspective is everything. When you view your story through God’s lens, you begin to see purpose in your pain and hope for your future.

Taking Practical Steps

Healing isn’t passive. It requires action. Commit to daily habits like journaling, prayer, rest and healthy boundaries. Seek support from a trusted friend, counsellor or Freedom Coach. Create realistic goals and celebrate small victories. Remember that progress is progress; don’t rush the process.

Experiencing Freedom

As healing takes root, you’ll notice changes. You’ll feel lighter. Fear and bitterness will lose their grip. You’ll find yourself loving and trusting more. You’ll become a testimony that free people free people. Others will be drawn to your story of healing, and you’ll have the privilege of guiding them.

Why Work with WalkerJamesLife’s Freedom Coach?

I chose the title Freedom Coach because it reflects my mission. I’m not just helping you set goals; I’m guiding you from brokenness to healing and from healing to freedom. Here’s why partnering with a Freedom Coach through WalkerJames.Life can be transformative:

  • Personal Experience: I’ve walked through deep pain and discovered how God uses brokenness to reveal His love. I know what it’s like to misjudge God and to learn that His silence isn’t rejection but invitation. That journey shapes how I coach.
  • Spiritual Integration: Healing isn’t merely a psychological exercise. It’s spiritual. We invite Jesus into every session. We pray. We ask God questions and listen for His response. This isn’t about formulas; it’s about relationships.
  • Accountability and Safety: Avoidance thrives in isolation. Coaching provides a safe place to share your story. I’ll hold you accountable, challenge patterns of avoidance, encourage you when it’s hard, and celebrate your progress.
  • Holistic Approach: I look at you as a whole person; body, mind and spirit. We’ll explore how your lifestyle, relationships, beliefs and habits interact. Healing touches all of life.
  • Tailored Guidance: No two journeys are the same. We’ll develop a plan that fits your story, whether that includes prayer, journaling, goal‑setting, or exploring deeper questions. We move at your pace, trusting God to lead.

If you’re struggling with trauma, depression or anxiety, I encourage you to work with a licensed therapist. Therapy is essential for clinical issues. Freedom Coaching complements therapy once you’re ready to focus on spiritual growth and forward momentum.

Practical Tools for Healing

Reflection and Self‑Assessment

Spend time writing about your experiences, feelings and beliefs. Look for patterns. Ask yourself: Where do I feel stuck? Where do I see avoidance? Awareness opens the door to change.

Listening Prayer

Set aside quiet moments to ask God specific questions and listen. Write down impressions, Scriptures or thoughts that come. Discuss them with your coach or a trusted friend. God speaks to His children; we just need to make space to hear.

Grief and Forgiveness Exercises

Unresolved grief and unforgiveness fuel avoidance. Allow yourself to grieve losses. Write letters of forgiveness (whether you send them or not). Ask God to help you release offense. Forgiveness doesn’t condone what happened; it releases you from the hold it has on you.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Physical and emotional health are connected. Prioritise sleep, nutrition, exercise and rest. Slowing down gives your heart space to heal. Establish boundaries around work, family and service so you have time to reflect and grow.

Community and Accountability

Share your journey with others. Healing happens in the community. Whether it’s a small group, a friend, or coaching sessions, letting others in breaks the power of shame and secrecy.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re tired of running from pain and ready to face it with God’s help, you’re ready. You don’t have to have everything figured out; willingness to be honest and open is enough.
